Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day are just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate love and friendship than with a handmade gift? This heart-shaped trinket dish is cute but also (as we'd hope) functional. Perfect for holding jewellery, small keepsakes, or even as a thoughtful decor piece!
Grab your Mini DIY Clay Kit, and let’s get rolling!
What You'll Need
- 300g of air dry clay (included in our Mini DIY Clay Kit)
- Rolling pin (or a smooth cylindrical object)
- Heart-shaped cookie cutter, a printable stencil or just your handy clay knife
- A small bowl of water
- Acrylic paint (your favourite colours)
- Glaze for a glossy finish
- Paintbrush
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Roll Out the Clay
Take approximately 300g of air dry clay and roll it into a ball. Use a rolling pin to flatten it to about 0.5-1cm thick—just like rolling out cookie dough.
Step 2: Cut Out a Heart Shape
Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter or carefully trace around a stencil with your clay knife. If you're feeling adventurous, freehand the shape for a more organic look.
Step 3: Shape the Dish
Use your fingers to gently curve over the edges. Press lightly around the sides to create a shallow dish effect. You can get creative and use some stamps to add your favourite message.
Step 4: Smooth the Surface
Dip your fingers in water and smooth any rough edges or uneven surfaces. This will give your dish a professional finish.
Step 7: Paint Your Heart Out
Choose your favourite acrylic colours and paint the dish. Reds, pinks, and metallics like gold or rose gold are perfect for a Valentine’s or Galentine’s vibe.
Step 8: Glaze for a Glossy Finish
Once the paint is dry, apply a layer of glaze for a polished look and to seal your creation.
Step 9: Share the Love
Your handmade heart-shaped trinket dish is ready! Wrap it up as a thoughtful gift or display it proudly in your home.
