General Clay Questions

Do I need a kiln to set the clay?

All our kits come with special air drying clay so they set with exposure to the air and dry naturally - this means they’re completely kiln-free, DIY and iso-friendly - our kits don’t lie.

How long will my creation take to set?

Drying time may vary depending on environmental conditions, but generally speaking, at average room temperature approximately 24-48hours. For people residing in Melbourne, it can vary between 3-3000 hours (just kitting, but seriously, we don’t recommend leaving your creation outside in case it rains, which it might. Or might not. Maybe. - Melbourne Weather Forecast).

Can I use my oven to set my clay?

Yes. You can bake your creation in the oven to speed up drying time, though there is a slightly higher chance of cracking if not careful. We generally recommend baking at 180 degrees celsius. Normally this will reduce the setting time to 2-3hrs. Be sure to regularly check your creation and flip it over to ensure even baking.

Oh no! I think I’ve broken it. I was after a clean blaze, but I got crack instead. What do I do?

Firstly, stay calm, it’s not the end of the world. We’ve recovered many crack issues before. Here’s a few tips and tricks: Damage control (it’s already baking and cracked): Ride it out, let your creation dry. Once it’s dried, create a “wet mix” using water and clay (should be a viscous liquid) and fill in the areas where it’s cracked. Leave it to dry again. This should resolve the issue of the cracks and you’ll be surprised how well the patch up repair blends in. Preventative measures (before it cracks - better than cure): make sure it’s not drying in direct sunlight or drying too quickly - if it sets too quickly there’s a higher chance of cracking. Make sure before you put it in the oven or left it out to dry that you’ve sealed everything properly and not let any areas with spacing between parts.

Bit of an odd one but I know the clay comes in a box. And pizza similarly, also comes in a box. My question is, can I reuse and reheat leftovers and will it be equally viable the following morning?

In short, yes. If you’ve finished a project and have clay left over, wrap it in cling film, put it in an airtight container, and store it in a cool dark place. It can keep up to a few months if stored well. We do not recommend this for pizza and cannot guarantee the lifespan of leftover pizza when stored with this method.

I stored my clay but it still dried out. Is it ded?

In ancient history, many important figures have been known to be revive on Sundays. Sunday & Clay is no different. Carefully place your withering clay in a water burial (ziplock bag filled with water). Allow to rest for 2 days. Remove the clay from the ziplock back and give it a good kneading - this should bring fresh life back into it.
